Grade 6-8
At Southmoreland Middle School, the physical education department uses a teaching style called sport education. Sport education is a curriculum and an instruction model that puts students in positions of responsibility and their success in those roles are important to their team’s overall success. Students participate as members of teams in seasons, plus they take an active role in their own sport experience by serving in realistic team roles. Each team will have authentic sport roles such as coaches, assistant coaches, athletic trainers, equipment managers, and a sports reporter. Throughout the year, teams develop team names, cheers, and game strategies as they work together to learn and develop various skills during game play. In sport education students assume more responsibility in decision making within their team. Sport education also offers small sided games with modifications to equipment, rules, and playing conditions in order to maximize all students’ involvement and success. The overall goal in sport education is to have everyone become competent, literate, and enthusiastic sportspeople. At SMS, we teach sports that have been broken down into four different categories. The sports in the various categories have very similar tactical problems.
Golf:
Depending on the weather, the students either play a short 18 hole golf course outside set-up on the soccer field or an 18 hole putt-putt golf course set-up inside the gymnasium. (For skills/outcomes see SMS curriculum.)
Net Games:
We play 4 different net games. We start with a made-up game called deck tennis; this game in a beginners volleyball. The next sport is volleyball. The last two sports are badminton and tennis. (For skills/outcomes see SMS curriculum.)
Invasion Games:
We play 7 different invasion sports: ultimate frisbee, soccer, team handball, speedball, football, pillow polo, and basketball. (For skills/outcomes see SMS curriculum.)
Softball:
Depending on the weather, the students will either play a full size game outside of the soccer field, where we have 2 fields set-up or we will play inside with modified equipment where we have 2 little fields set-up. (For skills/outcomes see SMS curriculum.)
Culminating Events:
· At the end of the golf unit the top 9 teams in the school have the opportunity to go golfing at Timber Ridge. We modify the course by making it shorter and the students play a scramble format.
· At the end of the net and invasion games units, the top 8 teams in the school will make the playoffs. Whichever team wins the playoff will have the opportunity to play against a teacher team.
· At the end of the softball unit, the top 8 teams in the school will make the playoffs. The playoff games take place during the activity periods. The winning team will have the opportunity to play against the teacher team.
